Real-World Ontario Winter Performance
Southern Ontario weather is notoriously unpredictable. Within 24 hours, conditions can shift from wet slush at +2°C to freezing rain, followed by a flash freeze down to −18°C with gusting winds. How do engineered snow-melting systems perform across these varied conditions?
Handling Different Winter Events
Freezing Rain & Ice Storms
Heated systems excel in freezing rain. Because the stone surface is maintained between 2°C and 4°C, supercooled raindrops melt on impact and drain away immediately. While unheated driveways become dangerous skating rinks, heated surfaces remain completely bare and wet.
Heavy Wet Snow (Lake-Effect Squalls)
When snow falls at 2 to 4 cm per hour, the system melts the bottom layer immediately. A thin slush cushion may temporarily develop during peak precipitation intensity, but snow never bonds or packs down into hard ice. Once the heavy squall passes, the surface clears to bare pavement.
Extreme Sub-Zero Cold Snap Performance (−20°C)
In extreme sub-zero weather, systems sized at 40 to 50 Watts per square foot have sufficient thermal capacity to maintain a surface temperature above freezing. WarmWay's smart controllers feature pre-heating logic that monitors barometric and temperature drops, warming the thermal slab in advance of approaching winter storm fronts.
