Electric vs. Hydronic: A Contractor's Perspective

There is no single "best" heating system. The right choice depends entirely on your property's size, available utility infrastructure, and budget. Here is how the two technologies compare for Southern Ontario winter conditions:

Electric Heating Cables

  • Thermal Response: Fast. Cables begin warming the stone or concrete within 15–20 minutes of sensor activation.
  • Maintenance: Virtually zero mechanical maintenance. No pumps, fluid loops, or expansion tanks.
  • Space Requirements: No interior mechanical room space required. The automated controller is contained in an outdoor or garage-mounted electrical box.
  • Limitations: Limited by residential electrical panel amperage. A full 1,200 sq ft driveway requires roughly 48 kW (200A at 240V dedicated capacity), which may require an electrical service upgrade.

Hydronic Glycol Loops

  • Thermal Response: Slower. The boiler must heat a large volume of glycol fluid which then slowly warms the sub-base and surface slab (45–90 minutes).
  • Operating Economy: Lower fuel cost per hour when powered by a high-efficiency condensing natural gas boiler.
  • Scalability: Ideal for expansive estate driveways exceeding 1,500 square feet where electric capacity is unavailable.
  • Limitations: High upfront mechanical cost ($6,000–$12,000 for boiler, heat exchanger, and pumps) and requires annual boiler servicing and glycol concentration checks.

Our Recommendation for GTA Homeowners

For standard residential walkways, front steps, and driveway tire tracks (under 800 sq ft), electric resistance systems are virtually always the superior choice due to their zero mechanical maintenance, immediate thermal response, and lower total installation cost. For estate properties over 1,500 square feet, hydronic natural gas systems should be carefully evaluated.
